Expectations for ruling and opposition parties' leadership race
Legislation relating to comprehensive reform of social security and tax systems has been approved and passed by the Diet. As the next step, it is necessary to swiftly launch the planned national council for social security system reform to engage in in-depth discussion. Furthermore, there are a number of important issues waiting for immediate solutions such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and energy policies. It is hoped that the parties will elect capable leaders who can find answers to these tough challenges.
Mid-/long-term energy policies
It is essential to maintain and develop diverse energy sources for the Japanese economic growth. The scenario of "zero use of nuclear energy" is unrealistic and unreachable. We should examine the pros and cons of all the three options -- reducing the share of nuclear energy in Japan's total power generation to zero, 15 percent or 20-25 percent by 2030 -- from objective and scientific viewpoints. At the same time, it is also important to ensure consistency with the comprehensive strategy for the rebirth of Japan and to maintain the Japan-U.S. alliance.
